A cold winter arrived from the north, reaching even the forest where a mother fox and her cub lived. One morning, the little fox was about to step out of their cave when he suddenly cried, "Ouch!" and came tumbling back to his mother, clutching his eyes. "Mommy, something's stuck in my eye! Pull it out, hurry, hurry!" he cried. Startled and flustered, the mother fox gently and timidly pulled away the paws covering his eyes to look, but there was nothing stuck in them. It was only when she stepped outside the cave entrance that she understood what had happened. During the night, pure white snow had fallen in deep drifts. The sun was shining glitteringly down upon it, reflecting off the snow with dazzling brilliance. Having never seen snow before, the little fox had been struck by the intense glare and thought something had pierced his eyes. The little fox went out to play. As he dashed about on the snow, as soft as silk floss, powdery flakes sprayed up like mist, briefly catching the light in tiny rainbows. Then suddenly, a tremendous thud and whoosh sounded behind him, and powdery snow like breadcrumbs came showering down over the little fox. Frightened, the little fox scrambled through the snow, fleeing some ten meters away. Wondering what it could be, he looked back, but there was no one there. It was only snow sliding down from the fir tree's boughs. Snow was still trickling between the branches like fine white silk threads. Before long, the little fox returned to the cave and said, "Mommy, my paws are cold. My paws are tingling," holding out his wet, peony-pink paws to his mother.
