The capybara (*Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris*) is a rodent classified in the genus *Hydrochoerus* within the family Caviidae.
Together with the lesser capybara (*H. isthmius*), it makes up the two species of the genus *Hydrochoerus*.
It is also known as the giant cavy (*oni-tenjikunezumi*).
Its scientific name means "water pig" in Greek, and its Chinese name also translates to "water pig."
It is the largest living rodent species.
It inhabits warm, riparian environments, mainly around the Amazon River basin in eastern South America.
Etymology
Its name comes from the Guaraní word *ka'apiûara* ("eater of slender grass"), which was adapted into Spanish as *capibara*.
In Japan, the theory that the name derives from *kapiyva* ("master of the grasses") in the same language is widely circulated, but there is no definitive evidence for this.
Its Japanese name is *oni-tenjikunezumi* (giant cavy).
In Japan, it is also frequently misspelled as *kapipara* or *kabipara*.
Morphology
The body length ranges from 106 to 134 centimeters.
Males weigh 35 to 64 kilograms and females weigh 37 to 66 kilograms, making it the heaviest of all living rodents.
The coat consists of long, stiff hair that feels like a scouring brush, allowing the animal to shed water simply by shaking its body.
It has four toes on the forefeet and three on the hind feet.
There is small webbing between the digits.
It has four molars on each side of the lower jaw (which previously distinguished it from other members of the cavy family, which have three), and the combined size of the first three molars is roughly equal to that of the fourth molar.
Scent glands (anal glands) are located around the anus.
Males develop a prominent, hairless, oval-shaped scent gland (morillo) on the snout, which is largely undeveloped in females.
