Cold winter came from the north, reaching even the forest where a mother fox and her cub lived.
One morning, the little fox was about to leave the den when he cried out, "Ah!" and came tumbling back to his mother, clutching his eyes.
"Mama, something got in my eye! Pull it out, please, hurry, hurry!" he cried.
Startled and flustered, the mother fox gently and cautiously pulled away the cub's paws from his eyes to look, but there was nothing stuck in them.
Only when she went out to the entrance of the den did she understand what had happened.
A heavy blanket of pure white snow had fallen during the night.
The sun was shining brightly down upon the snow, making the reflection dazzlingly bright.
Having never seen snow before, the little fox had been struck by such a brilliant glare that he thought something had pierced his eyes.
The little fox went out to play.
As he romped across the snow, which was soft as silk floss, powdery snow scattered like spray, casting fleeting little rainbows.
Then, all of a sudden, there was a tremendous thud and whoosh behind him, and fine snow, light as breadcrumbs, came showering softly down all over the little fox.
Startled, the little fox tumbled through the snow, fleeing some ten meters away.
Wondering what it could be, he turned to look, but there was no one there.
It was simply snow avalanching down from the branches of a fir tree.
Snow was still trickling between the boughs like threads of white silk.
Before long, the little fox returned to the den, held out his wet, peony-pink paws before his mother, and said, "Mama, my paws are so cold. They're tingling and stinging."
