寒い冬が北方から、狐の親子の棲んでいる森へもやって来ました。
或朝洞穴から子供の狐が出ようとしましたが、
「あっ」と叫んで眼を抑えながら母さん狐のところへころげて来ました。
「母ちゃん、眼に何か刺さった、ぬいて頂戴早く早く」と言いました。
母さん狐がびっくりして、あわてふためきながら、眼を抑えている子供の手を恐る恐るとりのけて見ましたが、何も刺さってはいませんでした。母さん狐は洞穴の入口から外へ出て始めてわけが解りました。昨夜のうちに、真白な雪がどっさり降ったのです。その雪の上からお陽さまがキラキラと照していたので、雪は眩しいほど反射していたのです。雪を知らなかった子供の狐は、あまり強い反射をうけたので、眼に何か刺さったと思ったのでした。
子供の狐は遊びに行きました。真綿のように柔かい雪の上を駈け廻ると、雪の粉が、しぶきのように飛び散って小さい虹がすっと映るのでした。
すると突然、うしろで、
「どたどた、ざーっ」と物凄い音がして、パン粉のような粉雪が、ふわーっと子狐におっかぶさって来ました。子狐はびっくりして、雪の中にころがるようにして十米も向こうへ逃げました。何だろうと思ってふり返って見ましたが何もいませんでした。それは樅の枝から雪がなだれ落ちたのでした。まだ枝と枝の間から白い絹糸のように雪がこぼれていました。
間もなく洞穴へ帰って来た子狐は、
「お母ちゃん、お手々が冷たい、お手々がちんちんする」と言って、濡れて牡丹色になった両手を母さん狐の前にさしだしました。
Translation
Cold winter has arrived from the north to the forest where the fox family lives. One morning, a baby fox tried to come out of the cave, but it cried out, ``Ah!'' and rolled over to the mother fox, holding its eyes. ``Mom, something stuck in my eye, please remove it quickly,'' she said. The mother fox was startled and panicked, and she gingerly removed the child's hand that was holding her eye and looked at it, but nothing had been stung. It wasn't until Mother Fox got out of the cave entrance that she realized what was going on. A huge amount of pure white snow fell last night. The sun was shining brightly on the snow, and the snow was reflecting in a dazzling manner. The young fox, who had never known snow, was struck by such a strong reflection that he thought something had stuck in his eye. The little fox went out to play. As I ran across the cotton-soft snow, the snow powder scattered like spray and a small rainbow appeared. Suddenly, there was a loud ``thud'' sound from behind, and powdered snow that looked like breadcrumbs came softly to cover the little fox. The little fox was so frightened that it rolled in the snow and ran away ten meters away. I turned around to see what it was, but there was nothing. It was snow falling from the fir branches. Snow was still falling like white silk threads between the branches. Shortly after, the little fox returned to the cave and said, ``Mommy, my hands are cold, and my hands are stinging,'' and held out her wet, peony-colored hands in front of her.
