The zero-rupee note is an imitation banknote issued in India to help fight corruption.
It is designed for frustrated citizens to "pay" in protest to government officials who demand bribes in exchange for services that are supposed to be free.
Modeled after India's standard 50-rupee note, the zero-rupee note was created by a non-governmental organization called 5th Pillar, which has distributed more than 2.5 million notes as of August 2014 since its founding in 2007.
The notes remain in use today, with thousands continuing to be distributed each month.
History
Corruption in India
Bribery is widely seen as pervasive across public offices in India, and in a 2021 report by Transparency International, an international non-governmental organization combating corruption, India ranked 85th on the Corruption Perceptions Index.
A study published by Transparency International India in 2005 indicated that 62% of Indians had firsthand experience paying bribes or using illicit influence to get public officials to do their jobs.
In 2005, Transparency International conducted the largest-ever study on the issue of bribery in India, surveying 14,405 respondents across 20 Indian states.
Rather than focusing on grand corruption by the wealthy and powerful, this study centered on the petty corruption experienced by ordinary citizens in their daily lives.
