The Statue of Mr. Orita (Orita Sensei Zō) is a bronze statue created to honor the achievements of Hikoichi Orita, the first principal of the Third Higher School, one of Kyoto University's predecessor institutions.
Originally erected on the Kyoto University campus, it became famous after being subjected to repeated, flamboyant graffiti and pranks that transformed it into pop-art installations.
After the original bronze statue was removed in 1997, parody statues titled the "Statue of Mr. Orita"—mimicking the original's placement and plinth setup—began to be created and displayed in its place.
Since the mid-2000s, these installations have regularly appeared during the entrance exam season (specifically during the first-round exam period), and they are also referred to as the "Statue of Mr. Orita."
The Original "Statue of Mr. Orita"
Hikoichi Orita (1849–1920) served as the principal of the Third Higher School (including its predecessor institutions) for 30 years and was also involved in the founding of Kyoto Imperial University as a member of its establishment committee.
The "academic culture of freedom" fostered at the Third Higher School under Principal Orita is said to have heavily influenced the new-system Kyoto University that succeeded it.
Since 1940, statues honoring Orita's achievements have been created three times.
1940: A statue was created through donations from Third Higher School alumni volunteers and erected in front of the school's main building.
1941: The statue was lost after being melted down during the Pacific War metal drives.
A plaster bust was created in its place.
1950: To commemorate the abolition of the old-system higher schools, a new bronze statue was created through alumni donations.
The extant bronze statue of "Mr. Orita" was sculpted in 1950 by Shindo Tsuji, a professor at Kyoto City University of Arts.
The bronze statue was erected in front of Building A of Kyoto University's College of Liberal Arts, which had once been the main building of the Third Higher School (the College of Liberal Arts was abolished in 1993 and restructured into the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies).
