Hello, everyone.
Unfortunately, the Hanjo-tei theater is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But until we can welcome you back upon our reopening, we Kamigata rakugo storytellers have come together to entertain you with a relay of short jokes!
To kick things off, I'll do a pun joke in the voice of Master Tsuyu no Gorobei.
"Is that carbonated water your husband's having?"
"Soda!"
Hello, I'm Katsura Matsukin, apprentice to Katsura Sankin.
It's a pleasure to be here.
"Boss, the number of people using our company's service keeps dropping."
"They've probably grown tired of it—the novelty has fallen."
"I see."
"So autumn has fallen, huh?"
"Well then, our company is heading into a harsh winter."
Hello, I'm Tsukitei Kiyu, often called the Kohei Uchimura of the Kamigata rakugo world.
In honor of Kohei Uchimura, here's a gymnastics joke.
Wait a second.
Over there, someone is running full tilt toward the vaulting horse, but... huh?
That's a boy, but he's dressed up as a girl.
Huh?
Oh, he's taking a "run-up"—he's in cross-dress!
Tokyo Olympics, here I come!
I'm Katsura Shinkichi.
A man was standing on a street corner when he saw another man pulling a large cart piled high with *andon* lanterns.
*Andon*—those traditional paper-covered light fixtures.
He was dragging this cart along, clattering and rumbling away into the distance.
The man thought, "Boy, it must get awfully dark where he's going!"
Ah, I'm Yonedanji. Oh, look, someone dropped a commuter pass here! What a pain, whose could this be? There’s no name on it. How inconvenient. What about the route?
There are no station names written on it either! How about the expiration date?
There's no date on it at all! Wait... how on earth did I even know this was a commuter pass?! That was a fond little joke by the late Master Shijaku. Everyone, let's hang in there!
Over to you!
